Established in Edmonton over 75 years ago, Associated Engineering has grown into a nationally recognized engineering firm with over 1,200 staff in 20 offices across Canada. A recipient of Canada’s Best Managed Companies designation since 2008, the firm continues to prioritize service, sustainability, and staff wellbeing.

Aura is proud to lead the design and construction of their new Saanich office, an inspiring workplace that reflects the firm’s local presence, national strength, and vision for the future.

Challenges & Vision

As Associated Engineering continued to evolve and grow, the team required a new workplace. The former office, while functional, was no longer aligned with the company’s needs or identity. After securing a new location in the vibrant Saanich Core neighbourhood of ‘The Garden City,’ the team took the opportunity to design and build a refreshed workspace close to local amenities and the community.

The blank slate of a shell space presented an exciting opportunity: to design a workplace from the ground up that could accommodate team expansion, enhance employee experience, and celebrate the brand’s values. The client sought a warm, welcoming environment, increased workstation capacity, improved shared spaces, and a distinct sense of place.

The Design Strategy

Aura guided the entire design-build process, transforming the empty shell into a vibrant, branded, and future-ready workplace. The design team followed Associated Engineering’s office design guidelines and skillfully integrated them into a cohesive vision.

Inspired by Saanich’s unique blend of urban and rural elements, Aura created a workplace rooted in community and connection. Natural textures, open spaces, and subtle biophillic elements work in harmony with dynamic layouts, metal accents, and innovative technologies. The result is a vibrant, functional space that balances urban concepts with the unique characteristics of the local landscape.

Key Features & Design Solutions

Staff Lounge & Kitchen

Positioned in the area with the best views, the staff lounge is designed to be the heart of the office. A large kitchen island, informal meeting zones, and a mix of seating encourage casual collaboration and relaxation. Integrated screen technology supports team events, while thoughtful lighting and greenery foster a warm, inviting atmosphere. The design meets the client’s vision for a space that brings people together and celebrates workplace culture.

Reception & Front of House

The Aura team crafted a memorable first impression with a reception area that reflects Associated Engineering’s identity. A custom millwork installation features Vancouver Island’s coastline, marking the Saanich location with the company logo. This millwork feature grounds the space with a strong sense of place and identity. Furthermore, an open ceiling painted in the company’s signature blue carries through reception and lounge areas, reinforcing brand identity while maintaining a vibrant, welcoming atmosphere.

The Outcome

Aura delivered a workplace that supports Associated Engineering’s operational needs and future growth. The design increased workstation capacity, introduced adaptable spaces, and embedded the firm’s values. More than just a functional office, the new Saanich location offers a space that embodies the firm’s culture and aspirations. This project highlights the impact of thoughtful design in shaping not just spaces but experiences.
